WORK to restore the Bunbury War Memorial will begin soon after representatives from the City of Bunbury, the RSL and Bunbury MLA John Castrilli met earlier this month.
The City was recently awarded a Federal Anzac Centenary grant of $29,704 as well as $10,000 from Lotterywest to restore the monument in time for next year's Anzac centenary commemorations.
Both the Heritage Conservationist undertaking the restoration and supervising Heritage Architect have been engaged and background research into the soldier’s original features has begun, as well as compiling a schedule of works as required by the State Heritage Office.
City staff has started maintenance work and upgrading of the soft landscaping, electrical and water supply in the vicinity of the memorial to beautify the surroundings with restoration to the statue to commence in the near future.
City of Bunbury Mayor, Gary Brennan said he was pleased with how the project was progressing.
“I look forward to works beginning so the monument can be restored to its former glory in time for Anzac Day,” Mr Brennan said.
“I’d also like to acknowledge Lotterywest and the Federal Government for providing council with the grant and also the RSL for their patience in the matter.”
