Australia's contingent of Anzacs, both the survivors and the fallen, were remembered at a series of events across Perth on Friday.
A service was held at Blackboy Hill to mark 100 years since the departure of the first Australian troops bound for World War I.
The site was once a training camp for soldiers preparing for battle.
A military procession marched to Bellevue and boarded a heritage train bound for Fremantle, where the commemorations resumed.
Hundreds lined the streets of Fremantle, waving flags and cheering as the parade continued from the historic train station to the wharf. It was a route many Anzacs followed as they prepared to board the first two ships – the Ascanius and the Medic.
Trevor Stephens was among the crowd and said the event brought back memories of his national service.
"Once they start playing the music and the pipe bands, that's when it will really start to hit a chord," he said.
Ross Anderson said he and friend Martin Janssen were unable to attend the large-scale commemorations in Albany, but that the Fremantle event was "the next best thing".
Mr Janssen said he was a reservist, while his father served with the Dutch Red Cross in the Second World War – a story he only learned a year ago.
"He was captured, I think there were three or four of them, and he was held on a train for three or four days, no food, no facilities," he said.
Simone Healy attended the event to support her sister, who played the snare drum with the Air Force cadets.
"She was pretty excited, it's a day off school," Ms Healy said.
"She spent the whole weekend learning the music, I feel like I almost know them myself!"
A second memorial service was held at Victoria Quay, attended by WA Governor Kerry Sanderson, Premier Colin Barnett and a number of other dignitaries.
RSL state president Graham Edwards said Western Australia contributed a "higher than the national average" number of servicemen and women.
"With the resulting per capita casualty rate of those killed and wounded in action higher than any other state," he said.
"A quarter of those who landed at Gallipoli in those first waves were West Australian."
The premier said, at the time, almost "every family had a connection" to the war effort.
"My father told me as a small boy that he remembered his brother Fred running down the farm driveway and jumping the gate in a single leap as he went to war," Mr Barnett said.
"Those men went away with a sense of excitement and adventure. Perhaps as they parted on that day there was also a sombre mood as they thought of what might be."
Anzac centenary commemorations will continue in Albany across the weekend.
