CRICKET: The Hay Park Redbacks pulled off their second upset victory in three weeks with a win over Colts on Saturday.
Colts may have been able to scrape by with relying on one player last week when Clayton Caltsounis’ 121 runs allowed them to beat Marist, but this week Hay Park exposed the reigning premiers.
Murray Goodwin put forth 96 runs for Colts, but he was the only batsmen to excel higher than a score of 15.
Receiving next to no help at all, Goodwin couldn’t shoulder the entire load as Hay Park chased down Colts’ total in the 44th over.
After winning the toss, Colts began the game on the wrong foot when opening batsman Tyler Robertson was dismissed before a run was scored.
Fellow opener Cruize Ciallella (11 runs) then helped Goodwin post a partnership of 27 before he too was dismissed.
The wickets of Brandon Walters (7) and Stuart Boyle (0) soon followed.
Caltsounis put up 15 runs for his side but he also fell to the Redbacks’ bowling attack, going down on a leg-before-wicket call bowled by Ben Saunders.
Colts’ final five batsmen in the order posted a combined score 19 with none of them scoring in double figures, as the side finished their innings with the score of 160.
Hay Park started their innings nearly as bad Colts did, losing the wicket of opener Brendan Jones for just two runs.
But the ship was steadied when Ryan Leybourne was joined by Steve Florance at the crease.
The pair put together a partnership of 97 runs before Florance was dismissed on 67.
Leybourne was the next to fall ending his day with 35 runs and leaving the side with the score of 3/118.
It was Ross Knoll who then took control helping his side to the victory.
Knoll hit 29 runs coming in at fourth in the order to make sure his side got over the line.
The Colts’ bowling attack was costly, coughing up 15 extras which included 12 wides.
Next week Colts will look to bounce back against Eaton while Hay Park will head into their bye week with a 3-3 record.
