BUNBURY volunteer fire-fighters have been left to clean up after thieves ransacked the Capel and Gelorup volunteer fire station on Thursday and Friday.
Department of Fire and Emergency Services superintendent Ricky Curtis said the doors of both premises were forced open and the stations were ransacked in the search for money and valuables.
“There are not many valuables kept on the premises so little was stolen but the community should not stand for this behaviour,” Superintendent Curtis said.
“It disappoints me that this has been done when the crews are busy preparing for summer.”
Superintendent Curtis said the crews had just moved into the official bushfire season, which has started earlier this year than normal because of the weather conditions.
“The volunteer fire fighters play an important role...they should be recognised for their efforts rather than targeted,” he said.
The damage bill is estimated at more than $5000.
