GIG: When I called to chat to Tom Godden from Stillwater Giants, he was standing in a precarious position on a roof.
When the former Margaret River lad was safely on the ground again, he explained he was building a house for a mate – which Godden himself had designed, courtesy of his Master’s in architecture.
Safe to say, this is one talented and busy young man.
Surfie indie-rock four-piece Stillwater Giants are the team responsible for that catchy tune Fly Under the Radar, after being Unearthed by Triple J to play the Groovin the Moo festival and becoming the first ever band to perform at the brand new Perth Arena in November, 2012.
They are locked in to headline the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre’s final Out of the Box and Into the Cube event for 2014 and Godden said they can’t wait to check out the new venue.
This year has seen the Stillwater crew focused on finalising their debut album which has been in the works for close to two years now – understandable, considering their hectic touring schedule through 2013.
“We’ve done it all live in the studio which is a new direction for us – we have been working with great producer Matt Gio, we go in with the bare bones of a song and he helps us workshop it.”
Last time Stillwater Giants were in town, they played with Dallas Royal at the Prince, who are their old mates from Dunsborough.
And even though they are now Perth-based, the South West will always be home.
“I’m down in Margaret River almost every second weekend, pretty much whenever the surf is good,” Godden said.
“That’s when our best song-writing sessions happen, after a good surf.”
The musician’s life is not wearing thin for the young talents, but Godden said they take a smart approach to keeping everything in balance.
“We are still really enjoying it, you do hit walls and that’s when you realise you need a break otherwise you burn out and lose inspiration,” he said.
“Next year is going to be great with a heap of touring, me and Henry (Clarke) were at this party the other day talking about what’s coming up and we were literally jittering, just getting so pumped for it.”
Stillwater Giants will take the stage at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre’s Cube theatre on Friday, November 28.
Limited tickets are available and the event is bound to sell out.
Tickets can be pre-purchased online at bunburyentertainment.com or at the BREC Box Office for $25, with limited doorsales on the night if available.
