GIG: When you have shared the stage with the likes of Passenger, James Blunt and Birds of Tokyo and clocked up nearly a decade in the industry, there’s a chance some of the novelty may have worn off.
Not the case for Queensland boys Busby Marou as they trek across the country with a special duo tour which will see them get back to basics and the core of what they are all about.
The tour will see Tom Busby and Jeremy Marou land onstage with a stripped back acoustic show at Bunbury’s Prince of Wales on Friday, November 28.
entertainment had a chat with Busby as he laid on the beach on the Gold Coast, taking some time to unwind during the huge 19-date string of shows.
“The duo tour is something we have been trying to do for so long, it’s how we started and it’s who we are,” Busby said.
“We have had the pleasure of working with some amazing musicians over the years but it’s always good to get back to basics with the two of us.
“We are a bit like wow, it’s such a different sound and we are actually preferring it, we are loving this tour.”
With 19 shows lined up for the tour and Bunbury at the end of the list, it’s a huge couple of months for the boys but Busby says it doesn’t wear thin when you’re travelling with someone who is more like your brother than your bandmate.
While it has been almost a decade of building their name, Busby insists the band still has the shine of an overnight success.
“Every day is exciting – our manager still calls us 10 times a day and we get excited to hear good news, whether our single has been added to the radio or if we have scored a huge support gig,” he said.
“Back in the day he would call to say ‘Wow, these people have actually heard of you!’”
To coincide with this tour, Busby Marou released Farewell Fitzroy: Days of Gold Edition, a special reissue of their second album, on October 18.
“We had always planned to do an acoustic recording and about a year ago the time was right, we laid down some really basic stuff, sometimes only one guitar and one voice,” Busby said.
“I had co-written a song with a friend, I wanted to do a pop song and it was on hold for The Voice contestants and some big artists.
“But then we decided to do it ourselves, we put it through the Busby Marou filter and were really happy with it, and that’s Days of Gold, it’s my favourite.”
The high achiever said there was “still a long way to go” in the life of the soulful musicians.
“We have worked long and hard but I have huge expectations for Busby Marou,” Busby said.
“We are driven by that need to be on top, no matter what we’re doing – it’s not about financial success but about doing as much as possible, travelling and writing and working with new people.”
Busby Marou will be joined by UK support act Fiona Bevan at the Prince of Wales on November 28.
