CELEBRATING cultural diversity and honouring a great story is the aim of the Mulan Jr production that will return to the stage in Bunbury this weekend.
The show tells the tale of a Chinese woman, Mulan, who overcomes adversity in a harsh time.
Director for the show R.J Smolders said that he, the cast and crew aimed to honour the terrific story line of the 1998 Disney film.
“I watched Mulan years ago with my children and we all loved it,” Smolders said.
“It’s such an inspirational story and the music is fantastic.”
Smolders said he was aiming to try something different with his first show and thinks he has struck a winner with Mulan Jr.
“We aimed to get a lot of young people in the show with a mix of experience as well.”
In terms of promoting multiculturalism, Smolders hopes that the show helps on both a local and personal level.
“We hope that we can provide people with something to take away from the show and think about,” he said.
“We’re aiming to use a diverse array of actors to help us translate the message to a local level.”
This weekend is Bunbury’s last chance to see Mulan live on stage at the New Lyric Theatre on Bourke Street on Saturday, January 24 at 11am and 2.30pm or Sunday, January 25 at 2.30pm.
