School is back for 2015 and with students set to return to the classroom, police are urging motorists to slow down.
Assistant Commissioner Nick Anticich said he urges motorists to avoid distractions and slow down in 40 kilometre an hour school zones. .
"Our children are vulnerable members of our community and it is up to drivers to be extra cautious in school zones," Assistant Commissioner Anticich said.
"Children cannot judge the speed of vehicles and they may not be aware of their surroundings.
“We will continue to target poor driving behaviour in school zones as we aim to protect our children”.
The new school year has an extra element of excitement about it with Year 7 students attending secondary school for the first time.
About 18,000 Year 7 students will join public secondary schools on Monday morning.
Education Minister Peter Collier said 29 schools received new building and works to help accommodate new students.
With Year 6 students now set to be primary school seniors, student leadership teams are also in place to provide role models for younger students.
