BASKETBALL: The South West Slammers men’s side has remained on top of the State Basketball League following a dominant round two performance against the East Perth Eagles at the Morley Recreation Centre.
The 111-85 win keeps the Slammers undefeated following back-to-back wins in round one of the competition.
After being a point down at half time, the Slammers produced a blitzing second half performance to conquer the Eagles.
Huge games from recruits Tre Nichols and Brian Voelkel had the Slammers in good hands, while player/coach Ty Harrelson also produced a strong performance.
Nichols poured in 31 points going 12 of 24 from the field and also notched two assists and two rebounds.
Despite not shooting the ball much, Voelkel still managed to tally a big double-double following a third consecutive powerful performance on the boards.
He claimed 18 rebounds in the Slammers win and chimed in for 11 points, five coming at the free-throw line.
Voelkel’s big night on the glass comes after a pair of big games in round one in which he notched 21 and 18 rebounds respectively.
Voelkel also continued to pile up dimes dishing out eight assists, falling just two short of a second triple-double for the season.
Long-time Slammer Trent Worthington also pitched in a double-double against the Eagles with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Harrelson flirted with a double-double tallying 24 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists, coming in 34 minutes of play.
The Slammers men’s side will play two games next week.
The first will be against the ninth-placed Stirling Senators at the Warwick Leisure Centre on Saturday before returning home to the Eaton Recreation Centre on Sunday to play the tenth-placed Kalamunda Eastern Suns.
The South West women’s side also remained undefeated in round two after they claimed a three-point win over the Eagles finishing the game 54-51 victors.
Deanica McCormick followed on from her dominant round one performance posting a huge double-double with 31 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and five steals while Patricia Bright was also strong on the glass tallying 12 rebounds to go along with five points.
The win places the women’s side in third on the ladder behind the Willeton Tigers and Perry Lakes Hawks on percentage.
The women’s side’s round three fixture will coincide with the men’s.
