AMID wild and wet weather, Bunbury City Karts ran their annual memorial race on Sunday, honouring long-time club member Ian Campbell.
Campbell, the youngest of four children and a lawyer in Margaret River, was tragically killed on Anzac Day in 1999, in a motorcycle accident while negotiating a difficult turn between Margaret River and Augusta.
At the club meet the following month, the club decided to honour his memory with a race dedicated to him in the senior national combined class (BCKC Light).
The tradition has continued with yesterday’s race being the sixth anniversary.
Although karting evolves from year to year with technological and mechanical improvements, competitors in yesterday’s race displayed reverence and a little nostalgia for Ian’s racing days by kitting up with the lighter J-engines.
Campbell drove cart number five, and until this year that number hasn’t been allocated to another driver in that class.
However young Brock Kenny was given the honour yesterday and did it proud.
Campbell’s family was at the track avidly supporting the drivers, with 15 year old Chad Pittard taking out the trophy.
