IT will be birthday celebrations all around in July as the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre teams up with the local X2Y group to mark some important milestones.
The centre has managed to secure impressive headline act San Cisco for its biggest Out of the Box and Into the Cube event to date, celebrating one year since the innovative new night out came to the city.
On Saturday, July 18, the Freo band will head down to Bunbury ahead of their upcoming appearance at Splendour in the Grass.
It’s no secret that Freo’s indie-pop darlings have blown up in the past year, playing a string of sold-out shows across Australia and internationally as well as packing out tents at 2015’s Groovin the Moo.
Reaching number two in its first week of release, their latest album Gracetown showcases a more worldly approach to life, exploring the tyranny of love, displacement, homesickness, heartache and heartbreak via disco, funk, soul and hip hop undertones.
They will be supported on the night by their good friends, synth-pop duo GRRL PAL, who last played in Bunbury at January’s Out of the Box + Into the Cube to rave reviews.
Also making an appearance on the night is local band Third Time Round, who took out Battle of the Bands here at BREC in April.
The action on the night won’t just be happening in The Cube though, with Bunbury’s X2Y group celebrating their second birthday at the event.
Last year we had a formal ball for our first birthday, which had a distinctive Generation X vibe, so this year we have changed it up and are celebrating in true Generation Y style with San Cisco.

The centre’s Wellington Suite will be transformed into the X2Y Lounge, with local DJs playing all night.
There will also be a private bar for X2Y members, as well as a pre-show function at the venue from 6pm.
“Last year we had a formal ball for our first birthday, which had a distinctive Generation X vibe, so this year we have changed it up and are celebrating in true Generation Y style with San Cisco,” X2Y founder Geoff Hill said.
“While this is a great chance for existing members to catch up in the X2Y Lounge, we also hope it encourages new members to get on board and discover what X2Y is all about.
“Our prime focus as a group is encouraging people of the X and Y generations to get passionate about where they live, and show them they can make a difference in shaping this great city.”
The event has been made possible with the support of X2Y and Bunbury Volkswagen.
“We were delighted to support BREC with such an incredible event, helping to bring a high-profile band like San Cisco to the people of the South West,” Bunbury Volkswagen marketing coordinator Robyn Shaikh said.
July’s Out of the Box + Into the Cube is set to be bigger and better than ever, while still featuring all the elements that have made it a much loved event in Bunbury.
There will be ping-pong, retro arcade games, pizza and jam-jar cocktails happening all night long as well as non-stop music all evening.
“We are so proud of what we have achieved with Out of the Box + Into the Cube over the past 12 months,” centre general manager Joel McGuinness said.
“People have really embraced this new and exciting music event in Bunbury, and we really hope we can continue to run it in the future with the support of the community.”
Tickets are on sale now for $40 and are selling fast. This looks like being a sell-out show so patrons are encouraged to pre-book tickets to avoid missing out.
