THERE’S a good chance you’re reading this during daylight hours so do me a quick favour, go over to a window and look outside, I will wait. Go on.
Is the sun still shining? It is? Well, thank goodness for that.
After the US Supreme Court ruled for same sex marriage over our weekend I was fearful for the future of the planet, but the world is still spinning and the sun will more than likely come up again tomorrow morning, and the next day and the next day after that.
Even if marriage equality is eventually passed in Australia, and make no mistake, it will be one day, the sun will rise over our land and continue to do so, and for those people the issue does not directly affect, life will continue and they will still not be affected.
But what if their son or daughter is?
I have two dear friends who have been together for almost 16 years and you have the gall to tell me that is not a marriage?
They have shared sickness and health, good times and very down times, some days they can’t stand to be in the same room, but a single night apart is torture.
Sounds like a normal long term “marriage” to me.
People who this issue will not affect feel a “moral” need to quote a 2000 year old book in defence of marriage and their vehement opposition.
Well, I can cherry pick passages too, (yes I know all about Leviticus) so let’s see what we can find.
John 4:8 says “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love”
He’s got a bit to say about adultery too (Hebrews 13.4) but apparently that doesn’t happen with straight people.
The USA has now done it, even Ireland, one of the most historically Catholic nations on the planet passed marriage equality several weeks ago and yet we drag our feet.
Please don’t bring me “Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve” and do not bother with ”maybe I could marry my dog”, it simply shows you are quite obviously bereft of a solid argument.
It is time.
Is the sun still shining? Thought so.
