GIG: You can’t help but smile and experience immediate mood improvement when talking to Danny K and Jay Le Kat from Perth band GRRL PAL.
It’s obvious that these two are, as the name suggests, great pals with an infectious positive outlook that makes you wish you could quit your job and join them on the road.
I was lucky enough to have both of them on the phone ahead of their performance at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre’s Out of the Box and Into the Cube event in July, supporting Freo’s San Cisco.
It was hard to remember that it was actually an interview and not just a casual chat with a couple of mates, but we managed to keep it on track with plenty of laughs along the way.
The pair began creating their “synthy-bedroom-pop” in 2013 and have impressed the music world with their fun approach.
I’m always curious to know how a group comes up with their name and the answer is always weird and wonderful.
“Well we wanted to call the band Gal Pal, which is inspired by a band in Texas but it was also the name of a sex toy – we didn’t really want people Googling us and finding that, I’ve got little brothers and sisters, we have to keep it PG!” Jay laughed.
“We are good pals 99 per cent of the time, we’ve become a bit too much like brother and sister – I’ve kind of elbowed my way into his family, he comes home and I’m sitting there having a glass of red wine with his mum.”
When I asked if they would consider adding another “pal” to the line-up (I’m available!) they seemed open to the idea.
“The stage was awesome, it was cool to be so close to everyone dancing.”

“The writing is between the two of us, but if things start snowballing there’s a chance we might take on an awesome female guitarist or back-up singer – we will get back to you on that,” Danny said.
The pair set themselves a challenge to release a song every month in 2015, which they said was working out okay so far but could become a little hectic in between a busy touring schedule.
Latest super-catchy single Paradise is about "your lover loving their phone more than you", which many in the modern world could surely relate to.
GRRL PAL had the crowd on their feet at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre when they first experienced Out of the Box and Into the Cube in January.
“We were impressed (with the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre), everyone was so professional, like they were wearing headsets and were like ‘you’re on in ten...' Jay said.
“The stage was awesome, it was cool to be so close to everyone dancing.”
Supporting San Cisco is sure to be a night to remember as they are all good mates and the bands “generally end up all going out together” after the gig.
Also making an appearance on the night is local band Third Time Round, who took out Battle of the Bands at the Bunbury centre in April.
