A NUMBER of retirement houses in Bunbury are up for sale for the first time because life tenancies have run out and the previous owners have moved on.
Bunbury Aged Persons Collective is the overarching body responsible for the units located at 100 Forrest Avenue Bunbury.
The collective was started 20 years ago when business man and Rotarian Rob Prestage suggested land at 139 Forrest Avenue South Bunbury be used to build housing for the elderly who couldn’t afford their own home.
Since 1995 the collective have expanded their properties and funded units in multiple locations.
Councillor Judy Jones has been involved with the housing collective since its inception and said life tenancies were becoming less manageable.
“I could see a need for independent living for over 55s and some people were not in a position to purchase their own property at retirement and that’s why these were a good option,” Ms Jones said.
“But now people are finding they want the security of owning their own property.”
Residents Estelle Jay and Barbara Fleay said they enjoyed living there because of the central location.
Both residents have lived there for more than 10 years and said they loved being so close to the other unit occupiers.
“We have really great neighbours, it is low maintenance and these people are my friends,” Ms Fleay said.
Currently Ms Fleay and Ms Jay’s units are on life tenancies, but the block has been strata titled and there are three vacant units for sale.
There are other properties which are to be sub-divided or sold off, including 139 Forrest Ave.
