AN Eagles win would have been the cherry on top of the cake for one Bunbury couple who had a jammed packed AFL grand final week in Melbourne.
Die hard Eagle fans Shane and Jenelle Whittome spent a week living it up in the home state of the AFL, attending some of the biggest events on the calendar year.
The Brownlow Medal, the grand final Footy Show, the grand final parade and the AFL grand final were just some of the highlights the Eaton couple experienced.
Mrs Whittome said the atmosphere was incredible with the city decked out in footy colours.
“All of Melbourne was wearing footy colours, even teams that weren’t in the grand final,” she said.
The trip was planned for Mr Whittome’s 30th birthday so the couple went all out for the celebrations.
“During the Brownlow Medal night, we sat in the room with all the players’ right up next to the stage,” she said.
“We were one table across from Essendon and another across from Melbourne and basically right in the middle of it all.
“Because we stayed at Crown Towers, we had footy players all through our lobby and got photos with everyone including Nat Fyfe who stood and had a chat to me for 10 minutes while he was standing on one leg.”
She said the experience as a whole was something they’d never forget.
“We’d do the grand final again but the Brownlow is a lot of money and just something you’d do once to say that we’d done it,” she said.
“The whole week was amazing so we can’t really pick a favourite part of the week.
“Just the build up to all of it, the way the whole state just celebrates one event is amazing.
“Because they had the public holiday for the parade, it just adds to the build up of the one sporting event and you just can’t move.”
