ACCESSIBILITY in Bunbury is about making everyone feel welcome.
Whether it’s a mum or a dad pushing a pram, to a sports person who has done an ankle or an older person who is unsteady on their feet.
Those are the words of City of Bunbury deputy mayor Brendan Kelly who is leading the way to making Bunbury the most accessible regional city in Australia (MARCIA) by 2020.
He said accessibility was about everybody being able to get to somewhere and use the facilities in the city with ease.
Mr Kelly, City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan and Bunbury MLC John Castrilli attended a pop up event to promote MARCIA last Friday.
Those passing by were handed MARCIA bags, free coffee and information about the plan which is in full swing.
“Access and inclusion is a universal right and we want to make sure Bunbury is the most accessible in Australia by 2020,” Mr Kelly said.
“We have a Bunbury Community Access Committee which is set up to make sure all public spaces, businesses and sporting clubs are accessible for all.
“It’s a never ending task but what we want to do is make sure we have accessible buildings, so in an older city like Bunbury we to make sure things like trip hazards are taken out .
Bunbury MLC John Castrilli said state government developments, including the Bunbury waterfront development, took accessibility and inclusion into considerations at all times.
“We want to have those principals included in all the developments we do because the community is the whole community from A to Z,” Mr Castrilli said.
“I’d like Bunbury to be recognised by people around the state, I want them to say ‘let’s go to Bunbury because Bunbury provides total activities and total access for all of us".
