WITH the crayfish season officially kicking off last Thursday, many South West divers grabbed the opportunity to hit the water and find out what was lurking beneath the surface.
Coastal Water Dive owner Torry Goodall reported a positive start to the season, with great catches despite poor underwater visibility.
Mr Goodall said many divers took home “jumbo crays” at a depth of about 28 metres and most were catching their limit of eight crays per person at five metres near Peppermint Grove Beach.
With around 25,000 people taking about 400,000 individual rock lobsters annually, rock lobster fishing represents a major recreational activity in WA.
Most recreational rock lobster fishing occurs in inshore coastal waters between North West Cape and Augusta.
Recreational fishers must have a licence to fish for any species of rock lobster and produce it when requested to by a Fisheries and Marine Officer.
