A YOUNG Bunbury man known as an energetic and passionate community member has been nominated for a Western Australian Young Achiever Award.
Cory van Dijk is in the running to win the Australia Community Service and Volunteering Award to recognise him for his dedication to his volunteer roles at the State Emergency Services and Fire and Rescue.
The award aims to encourage, reward and most importantly promote the positive achievements of young Western Australians up to 29 years of age.
“It would be a massive shock if I won the award because I’m not the only person who volunteers their time and I do it because I love it,” he said.
“It is always nice to be recognised and I don’t think the public realise how much the SES and DFES do.
“Being recoginsed is a nice reminder of how important the work we do is.”
Last Sunday was an example of the amount of time Mr Van Dijk spends volunteering.
He said in total he volunteered for 13 hours and left with a good feeling at the end of the day.
Councillor Murray Cook was one of the people who nominated Mr Van Dikj and he said it was because of his maturity and self motivated attitude.
“He is an outstanding example of our young people in the community and he is also Bunbury’s former youth citizen of the year and the training manager of the Bunbury volunteer fire unit,” Mr Cook said.
“He deserves to be recognised for the magnificent work he does.”
Category winners will each receive $2,000 with finalists presented and winners announced at an awards gala presentation dinner at the Parmelia Hilton on Friday, May 13.
