A Malaysian man wanted over a serious sexual assault in Scarborough 20 years ago is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday morning.
The 49-year-old was arrested when he flew into Sydney airport on Thursday evening and WA police subsequently successfully sought his extradition over the 1996 attack.
Police allege the man, who was studying in Perth at the time, broke into a Scarborough villa in March 1996 and committed numerous offences against a (then) 38-year-old female resident.
The man is expected to arrive in WA on Friday afternoon and faces the following charges;
- Six counts of aggravated sexual penetration without consent
- Deprivation of liberty
- Burglary
- Unlawful wounding
Police spokesman Luke Eliot said the arrest was the result of a case review by the State Crime Operations Squad.
"The squad is tasked with cold case reviews of unsolved historic serious offences using the latest forensic technology and investigative techniques," he said.
