For the sixth straight year Bunbury Ultimate Inc will hold the annual Bunbury Ultimate Frisbee tournament ‘Moovin the Groove’ to coincide with the weekend’s Groovin The Moo.
Eleven teams are expected to arrive at the Leschenault playing fields on Sunday morning.
Bunbury’s own team ‘Buttermonkeys’ are proud to host such an epic, mixed gender event.
They will face off against two teams from Esperance, seven Perth teams and the state under 18 boys team who are heading to the 2016 Australian Youth Ultimate Championship in June in Melbourne later this year.
The sport relies on the spirit of the game that puts the responsibility for fair play on every player.
This year’s tournament sees an increase from seven teams, illustrating the growing popularity of the sport.
The inclusive sport is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission and more recently by the International Olympic Committee.
It is played in over 80 countries worldwide and is a sport at the World Games.
The sport is played on a grass field with teams fielding seven players on the field at each time plus substitutes.
During a game, the aim is for the team with the Frisbee to pass it up the field to the others on their team and complete a pass into the endzone.
At the same time, the defensive team is trying to intercept it or knock it down.
If they succeed, they get possession of the disc and are trying to score in their endzone.
The sport is unusual in that there are no referees.
Instead the sport relies on the spirit of the game that puts the responsibility for fair play on every player.
Those on the field make their own calls when violations occur. If there is disagreement regarding an incident, the Frisbee returns to the player who made the last pass and the game resumes.
The spirit of the game award is a highly coveted prize at tournaments.
Ultimate Frisbee is played in Bunbury every Monday night at the Hay Park rugby fields from 6pm.
The Bunbury tournament will run from 9am to 5pm on May 8 at Leschenault Recreation Reserve.
