Both Woolworths and Coles stores in the South West are currently experiencing a shortage of eggs.
Visits to stores from both brands across Greater Bunbury saw shelves with little or no stock and notes from both supermarket chains apologising for the lack of available product.
A note in the Treendale Woolworths store said the reason for the shortage was unprecedented demand, colder weather and lower than expected farm yields.
The slip noted free range eggs, particularly 700 to 800 grams, may be in short supply for a number of weeks as “industry works hard to meet demand”.
A similar note was published for Coles customers that also said the shortage was due to seasonal conditions and increased demand.
Last month, the Sydney Morning Herald reported eggs shortages would likely affect Australia for multiple months as producers scramble to meet new free-range laws
In March, the federal government introduced a legal definition of "free-range", which limits producers to one chicken per square metre and requires chickens to have "meaningful and regular access" to the outdoors.
Australian egg consumption is up 3-4 per cent but uncertainty around new free-range laws means the industry isn't willing to invest in new capacity to meet the demand.
Free-range hens lay less frequently in the winter months, exacerbating the problem.
Egg Farmers Australia spokesman John Coward told Fairfax Media he expected supply to meet demand in about two months.
