Glen Huon Primary School’s year one and two students planted a tree on Friday as a part of the education on sustainable environmental practices.
The school worked with the Shire of Dardanup parks and gardens team leader Jenna Murray and environmental officer James Kain to plant a sapling peppy tree at the school.
Mr Kain said they hoped educating the kids early would help instill positive habits later in life.
“Hopefully we can get them while they’re young and have them thinking environmentally as much we can,” he said.
Ms Murray said by educating the kids there is a roll on effect to parents.
“Because kids are young they’re kind of like sponges, they absorb what they’re told and they brag about it to their parents and that affects the way they think,” she said.
Mr Kain then presented the students with official eco-warrior lanyards.
Science teacher Dee Seeley said the tree planting was part of the students environmental science classes.
“We’ve been teaching the kids water wise habits and about the habitat of animals and we’ll continue to teach them about the environment,” she said.
