VIETNAM’s history, culture and economic position was discussed at a Bunbury-Nha Trang friendship city fellowship lunch held at the Vietnamese Bakery on Prinsep Street last Thursday.
Perth-based businessman, musician and song-writer David Morgan treated his audience to tales of his work experience and adventures while in Vietnam.
Morgan said his stay in South Vietnam in 2008 working on a 145 foot vessel with locals, helped socialise him within the community and gave him an insight into Vietnamese culture.
He described Vietnam as a “long skinny country” with a population of 93 million and strategically positioned on the South China Sea.
“There were challenges with language but the locals took me to parties in the park where we would sing with a guitar and I would be invited to weddings,” he said.
Morgan said the Saigon River left a big impression on him and his experiences stirred him to write songs about the country that helped promote it as a tourist destination to the western world.
Beef pho, curry and vermicelli noodle salads were dug into as Morgan treated his audience to songs on his Hello Vietnam: Volume 1 CD including I Love Vung Tau and Saigon Heart.
