Community sporting clubs from in and around Bunbury are coming together as an united front to look at ways that sport can help prevent alcohol harms.
With more people dying from alcohol-related issues than the national road toll, sporting clubs can provide environments that influence individual behaviour.
The Good Sports program is running two forums in Bunbury this month to teach sports club how they can support their members. They will also teach the community ways to tackle the issue.
“Sport is a powerful vehicle for promoting social change and the forum will highlight the steps you can take individually and as a sporting club to affect long term change and create healthy and safe environments,” WA Good Sports manager Greg Williams said.
“It’s open to everyone - sport club administrators, players and members, people involved in education, local government, health, community development and youth services.
“Sporting clubs can lead by example; they shape the community, influence local attitudes and greatly improve lives.”
Mr Williams said sports clubs also influence their local communities through strong leadership.
“The Good Sports program is a strong mechanism for social change through sport. Club committees, members, coaches, staff, players, friends and families all have the capability to inspire the community and create a bright future,” he said.
The two forums will be held at the City of Bunbury office on October 26 from 6.30pm to 8pm and October 27 from 7.30am to 9am. To RSVP visit eventbrite.com.au.
The Good Sports program works with more than 7000 clubs nationwide to help them develop healthier and safer environments for their members, and create a healthier future for our younger generations.
Good Sports clubs have less risky drinking and are healthier, safer and more family-friendly places to enjoy sport.
