Bunbury ping pong tournament to battle human trafficking

More than 60 communities across Australia will be participating in the competition which sees multiple games of ping pong played over 24 hours with teams taking shifts of three hours.

The Bunbury event has raised more than $15,000 in the last two years and hopes to raise a further $400,000 nation wide this year to support nine partner organisations in South East Asia.

Bunbury pong-a-thon organiser Tim Wheeldon said he strongly encouraged men to get involved with the fundraising event.

“It’s a very strong cause to support the battle against what is modern slavery, but aside from that it’s a good way to get mates together and that’s something I think men struggle to do these days,” Mr Wheeldon said.

Schools have began adopting the event as a means of educating on human trafficking and encouraging a shift in attitudes and male behaviours towards women. 

Mr Wheeldon said they were still looking for more teams to take over the late night shifts.

“I’ll be hanging around until late at night but we’re still looking for teams to take up the really late night shifts from midnight until morning,” he said.

Ping pong-a-thon kicks off on November 4 at the Vineyard Auditorium and goes until November 5.
