Jockeys Jason Whiting and Randy Tan both scored doubles under grey skies at Bunbury Turf Club on Thursday afternoon.
Six runners went around in the first with Tan aboard favourite Grindabella ($3.50) stalking the early pace in second and settled well in third. Hugging the rail around the final bend, the grey mare wound up late to outsprint leader Saxapak by a length.
Tan also took out race five with Gattling ($7.90). Gattling was sent forward early and held the lead with 800 metres to go. It looked like Tan might have gone too early halfway down the straight but as the field drew closer, Gattling lengthened his stride to hold on by a length.
Rank-outsider Saxappeal ($26 place dividend) added some value to the exotics while the late run from Major Attraction is one for the black book.
Whiting’s first win of the day came in race three courtesy of Venus Ebony ($12). A generous split opened up down the straight for Venus Ebony who took the gap, hit the front and held off the fast-finishing Miss Iconic by a short half-head.
He then claimed the eighth and last of the day with Saint Stephen ($8.50). Settling at the back of the field from a wide barrier, the Fish struck late to win by a neck.
Race two saw Akiko ($4) leave her rivals in the dust. Jockey Steven Parnham had a lap full of horse at the point of the turn and opened up a noticeable margin with 300 metres to run. The three-year-old stuck on well to claim victory by more than three lengths.
Bunbury jockey Glenn Smith claimed race four courtesy of a gun ride aboard Dutch Spy ($3.20). The four-year-old unleashed down the outside of the track to score comfortably.
Highly touted Just A Fluke compounded late to finish a disappointing sixth.
Arguably, the most impressive winner of the day came in race six with Peter Hall mowing down his rivals aboard Awaken ($2.80) to score by four lengths. The three-year-old brown filly trained by Grant and Amanda Williams looks set for bigger things after crushing the opposition in her first run.
Local trainer Michael Lane also tasted victory with Jarrad Noske partnering Boom Boom Bang ($12.10) to the line convincingly in race seven.
Racing returns to the Bunbury Turf Club on Sunday, November 20.
