The Salvation Army in Bunbury expect to help as many as 1000 people this Christmas and need the public’s help to do it.
Bunbury Salvation Army Lieutenant Harriet Farquhar said last year the local corps fed 350 families, or about 1000 people and provided toys to more than 500 children.
“Christmas can be a difficult time for many and we always endeavour to help where we can,” she said.
“We are about families and we are asking everyone in Bunbury to spread some love this holiday season.”
Lieutentant Farquhar said Bunbury was incredibly generous last year, donating around $23,000 in food and $15,000 in toys and she hopes people can find it in their hearts to help out again.
“We have already made up some hampers and know that $65 would provide a family of four with enough food for a pleasant Christmas day,” she said.
“If there are 350 businesses or individuals who could each make up one $65 hamper, it would make Christmas in Bunbury incredibly special,” she said.
“Any excess is added to our food room for use in the new year so nothing goes to waste.
“Every donation no matter how big or small really does make a difference.”
Suggested non-perishable food item ideas at Christmas time include tinned fruits and vegetables, breakfast cereals, long-life milk, tea and coffee, jelly crystals, biscuits, lollies and muesli bars.
It may also be worth considering pudding, bonbons or candy stockings to help those receiving the hampers feel a little extra special this Christmas. Unfortunately, the group are not allowed to accept home baking.
Lieutenant Farquhar said so far it looks like the Bunbury corps will be helping a number of larger families and families where the grandparents are caring for the grandchildren.
She said for these groups it can be difficult to purchase presents and while Christmas is not only about receiving gifts, a toy for a child on December 25 allows them to feel as special as their peers.
Donations can be made to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal at their headquarters on Timperley Road, Bunbury six days a week.
