Nicole Kidman thinks it is time Americans show Trump some support

The Oscar-winning actress, who is a dual citizen of the United States and Australia, has caused controversy by revealing her political stance in an interview with BBC Two's Victoria Derbyshire.

Sitting down to talk about Kidman's new film Lion, talk segued to Kidman's opinion about the reality-TV-host-turned-politician. Kidman acknowledged that she has been hesitant in the past to speak out about the political realm in either of her home countries.

"I'm always reticent to start commenting politically; I've never done it in terms of America or Australia. I'm issue-based," she said. "[Trump is] now elected and we as a country need to support whoever is the president. That is what the country is based on. And however that happened, it happened, and let's go."

The actress went on to explain that she will continue to support causes that are close to her, including women's health. However she did not make the connection that many of those rights will be under attack when Trump takes to power next week, including funding for planned parenthood and the health care system.

"I'm very, very committed to women's issues ... I do a lot of fundraising for UN Women and I do a lot of travelling for them," Kidman said. "I also do an enormous amount of fundraising for breast and ovarian cancer, because that's something that's affected my family deeply. So they're my issues that I'm very attached to."

Her comments are very different to those made by her Hours co-star Meryl Streep, who gave a politically charged speech aimed at President-elect Trump at the Golden Globes this week without mentioning him by name.

And it seems that many celebrities hold the same sentiments as Streep, with stars including Katy Perry advocating for Hillary Clinton during the campaign trail. Counteracting Trump's inauguration, celebrities including Madonna, Scarlett Johansson and Cher are set to headline the Women's March in Washington.

Kidman, who was born in Hawaii but grew up in Australia, lives in Nashville with her husband, country singer Keith Urban, and their two daughters. The pair sported an "I Voted" sticker after last year's November election, however the actress has not made it explicitly clear who she voted for. Kidman also revealed to Derbyshire her one regret in life - that she has not had more children.

"I would have liked probably two or three more children. I love children, I love raising children, my sister has six children, I just love them," she said.

Kidman, who has two adoptive children with her ex Tom Cruise, said she would consider adopting again, but said Urban felt he was "maxed out", and would prefer to focus on what they have.
