Andrew Frazer is back by popular demand and he’s bringing with him an original new initiative in the vein of his popular Bunbury art festival Re.Discover.
The new project - Outside The Box - will see four artists, including Frazer, using their skills to transform a series of 20 electrical boxes scattered through Bunbury’s CBD into whimsical characters.
Frazer said the idea came about after walking through the town and noticing the power boxes would “make great canvasses."
“We’ve been simmering away on the idea for about a year,” Frazer said.
“It’s about taking some ordinary objects, applying a little imagination and turning them into something beautiful,” he said.
“It’s not Re.Discover, but it comes under the Six Two Three Zero umbrella.
“I hope it’ll follow on from the narrative that was set down with the previous festival.”
As part of Outside The Box, Frazer, along with artists Hayley Welsh, Tim Howe and Ian Mutch, will be conducting workshops with the students from Bunbury Primary School and Grace Christian School.
Frazer said the artists will be teaching the students about illustration and characterisation before using their ideas to craft the characters that will adorn the boxes.
“We’ve tailored this project so the kids come away from it having learned something about art and with an experience they’ll remember,” he said.
Outside The Box will have an accompanying walking tour map which will be available for free at a number of CBD locations.
Frazer said logistically, the project was easier than Re.Discover because of the smaller space the artists will be using.
“The artists aren’t needing to work at heights, so it has been much easier to organise,” he said.
Frazer said the transformed boxes will “build on Bunbury’s thriving cultural reputation and allow people of all ages to enjoy our beautiful city”.
The work produced by the students will go on display at a closing exhibition on March 11 at the Stirling Street Art Centre open to the public.
Frazer’s Outside The Box is the latest in a string of events designed to bring a vibrant atmosphere to the Bunbury CBD including the city’s inaugural Fringe Festival, Food Truck Fiesta and the Chinese New Year Festival.
