To kick valentines day off on a safe note this year a group of Bunbury health organisations banded together to spread the word about safe sex.
The South West Aboriginal Medical Service, Headspace Bunbury, Waratah, South West Women’s Health Information Centre and the Department of Health spent the day at Harvey High School promoting respectful relationships and Safe Sex Awareness to years nine to 12.
Dianne Tate from Waratah said teenagers don’t always feel comfortable about asking people who know them about sexual matters.
“This interagency one day initiative held on National Condom Day gives them the opportunity to hear from people working in the field and ask those awkward questions in a safe and culturally sensitive environment,” she said.
The event showcases local services and aims to encourage young people to freely discuss Sexual Health and provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to feel comfortable accessing services and to take control over their own sexual health.
Youth Educating Peers presenter Jordina Quain said the students were very receptive and open to learning about sexual health through other young people.
The Sexual Health week ongoing message is safety, pleasure and respect, a message that was widely spread through activities such as this around the country.
