Bunbury born-and-bred jockey Damian Lane recorded one of the biggest wins of his young career on Saturday, by claiming victory in the $1.5 million Group One TAB Australian Cup at Flemington.
Lane was picked to ride four-year-old New Zealand gelding Humidor, trained by Darren Weir beat off last year’s Melbourne Cup runner up Jameka to claim his fifth career victory.
Running wide on the bend, Humidor gathered outstanding pace in the straight to charge down the field and salute by half-a-length.
Lane then flew to South Australia on Monday to compete in the Adelaide Cup at Morphettville.
Partnered with the Darren Weir-trained Master Of Arts, Lane chased hard in the straight but couldn’t catch tearaway leader Annus Mirabilis. Master of Arts finished third.
Lane will return to Bunbury this Sunday for a card full of races on Stakes Day.
In the Breeder’s Plate he will team up with Variation. Last November, the pair won the Group Two WA Guineas at Ascot.
