Bunbury’s Police and Community Youth Centre was officially reopened on Wednesday after a $1.1 million upgrade was completed with the help of state government grant funding.
Police minister Michelle Roberts visited the centre to unveil the renovated premises which includes a refurbished commercial kitchen, improved entry and exit points and upgraded cabinetry and plumbing.
“This centre is an important tool for youth engagement and does an excellent job in crime prevention,” she said.
“It is a valuable part of the community and has moved with the times since it was first opened in 1941 to now embrace both sexes and be inclusive in its operation.”
Centre manager Joanne Hill said the role of PCYC in our community is highly valued.
“The upgrade will allow for the expansion of recreational activities that are currently on offer at the centre,” she said.
“The upgrades will also allow for the delivery of youth diversionary programs including Ice Breakers, which focuses on rehabilitating and supporting current and recovering crystal methamphetamine addicts.
“Another program currently seeking funding is Safe Space which would provide activities and hot meals to local youth on a Friday night to deter them from loitering and committing crime throughout the community.”
