TAFE Horticulture students develop skills in Milligan outdoor makeover

The Milligan Makeover is a community driven initiative to redevelop the outdoor play area at the centre.

Some of the plans for the redevelopment include sustainable design concepts for a nature play area, sandpit, outdoor seating, native plants and outdoor community education classroom. 

South Regional TAFE horticulture lecturer Kellie Hodge said the students were very excited about the opportunity to be involved in creating an amazing transformation.

“The students are meeting renowned local landscape architect Peter Roberts to discuss the design for the space which will help them gain some valuable industry knowledge,” Mrs Hodge said.

“The project will tie-in well to the students units on garden design and give the students an understanding of all the processes involved in a larger project. 

“Next semester we are hoping students will actually help create the final masterpiece and be involved in setting out and planting in the garden.”

Milligan Kids coordinator Elizabeth Huxtable said the outdoor area was in need of an upgrade.

“The makeover will enable the centre to further outdoor education and support facilities and provide more creative spaces for children to play and learn,” Ms Huxtable said.

“We are thrilled to have the horticulture students involved in the project and with support from their lecturer Kellie Hodge.

“There is a great sense of excitement and drive around this community project with the existing partnerships and connections that have been made.”

Milligan Community Learning and Resource Centre received funding for stage one of this project from the South West Development Commission through the Community Chest Fund.
