The Slammers men clutched on to a tight victory over the Mandurah Magic on Saturday night to take home their second win for the season.
The side finally broke their drought with a win against the Flames last weekend and kept the momentum going with a 16 point victory over the winless Mandurah team at the Eaton Recreation Centre.
But the Slammers had to pull out some magic of their own to hold on to the win, with the away side working hard in the final quarter to trail by just three points at one stage.
Fans were on the edge of their seat as Mandurah continued to scare the Slammers side, who got out to a 20 point lead during the game.
But the Slammers outscored the Magic in the first half, and Mandurah was unable to crawl back the points.
Tre Nichols had another outstanding game, scoring a game-high 30 points and Brian Voelkel excited crowds with 14 impressive rebounds.
The Slammers shot their two-point goals at a particularly high 66 per cent, backed up a 73 per cent free throw accuracy, proving to the league that, despite their rocky start to the season, they mean business.
The home side were able to keep their composure as the Magic clawed their way back in the final term, drawing out fouls that saw Damon Ballantyne and Ricky Kreklow fouled off for Mandurah.
The final siren blew, the Slammers extending their lead to win 87-71.
The women’s side were unable to do the same, going up against an undefeated and confident Mandurah Magic team.
Despite a quick start by the Slammers which saw them open up an early 7 point margin to start the game, a disappointing second term saw the side only score nine points to Magic’s 27.
Missing Kate Fielding and Tori Dugan, the Slammers struggled to shoot with any efficiency, finishing the game with just 27 per cent accuracy for their field goals.
Courtney Bayliss and Georgia Denehey however had impressive games, taking home MVP and Coach’s award for the game respectively.
Bayliss shot 20 points and worked hard for 13 rebounds, mostly defensive.
But the side were unable to keep up with Magic stars Casey Mihovilovich and Carly Boag, going down to Mandurah 55-86.
The Slammers will play the Willetton Tigers at the Willetton Basketball Stadium on Sunday.
