The South West Slammers mens side extended their vein of good form on Saturday night with a comprehensive win over the Cockburn Cougars.
Full of energy early, Teny Puot hit back-to-back threes while Chris Douglas dunked true to get the Eaton Recreation Centre crowd on their feet.
A three from Michael Lay close to the buzzer had the Slammers up 30-22 at the first change.
Tre Nichols played his way into the game and shot 11 straight points to blow the margin out to 25 points at the main break.
The Slammers edged further ahead in the third term with the help of some key rebounds from Clive Weeden.
The Cougars struggles offensively throughout the clash and in the end the South West side took the prize 92-69. Nichols finished the game with 23 points while Lay scored 21 and Weeden scored 17.
The victory elevates the Slammers to sixth on the ladder with five wins from their last six matches.
The result was less favourable for the women’s Slammers who also hosted Cockburn in Eaton on Saturday night.
The home side started quick and led by as much as 15 points early thanks to a number of successful three-point attempts from Courtney Bayliss.
But the Cougars found their feet in the back half of the game to run out 86-70 winners.
Bayliss finished the match with 22 points while Georgia Denehey scored 17 and Brittany Hodges shot 15.
This Friday, the Slammers will travel to Perth to take on the Redbacks before hosting Geraldton in Eaton on Saturday night.
It was also a big week for import players Nichols and Hodges who have been named in the WA south all-stars team to play on WA Day.
Nichols, who was also named in the side last year, has scored 222 points for the Slammers in nine 2017 games.
He will be joined in the side by Kyle Armour and Jay Bowie from Willetton, Jacob Ervin Holmen from Geraldton and Jalen Billups from Cockburn.
Hodges has scored 173 points and made 112 rebounds in her first eight games of the regular season.
She will be joined in the side by Nici Gilday and Carly Boag from the Mandurah Magic, Stacey Barr from the Willetton Tigers and Ali Schwagmeyer from Lakeside Lightning.
The SBL all-star games for Lifeline WA will take place at the Bendat Basketball Centret on WA Day, June 5 as part of the festival of basketball.
Entry is a donation to Lifeline with heaps of activities, games and prizes on the day.
