The staff at William Barrett and Sons witness the devastation cancer can cause every single week.
More than 24,000 Australians will die of cancer every year.
However, there is some good news from the Cancer Council. Prevention, detection and treatment for most cancer types is improving steadily and saving thousands of lives each year.
To support such progress the Cancer Council launched the Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraising event 24 years ago and Bunbury residents have taken part in it at William Barrett and Sons since its inception.
This year it is hoped to raise more than $13 million nationally to fund research, prevention and support services.
William Barrett and Sons event organiser Joscelyn Jones said the Bunbury event will be held tomorrow at its Spencer Street premises between 9am and 1pm.
“We are always blown away by the volume of people who come through the gates and the positive atmosphere that we enjoy year after year,” Mrs Jones said.
“People of all ages get together for a fun morning and raise funds for a cause close to their hearts.
“We hope we will attract the same support this year because, while cancer continues to devastate families, we need to keep up this fight.”
The Bunbury Primary School marimba band will make its debut at the event, joined by the Dalyellup Primary School Circus Troupe, Picton Primary School Ukulele Band and South Bunbury Primary School Choir and Ripper Skippers.
There will be a sausage sizzle lunch, raffles and a silent auction all with the hope of raising more than $20,000 for the Cancer Council of WA.
That would bring the total raised by the event during the past 24 years to more than $280,000.
