The Augusta-Margaret River Hawks have put the rest of the South West Football League competition on notice by breathing new life into their season.
The Hawks, who have looked a little below their best in season 2017, captured a stunning upset on Sunday, defeating the reigning premiers South Bunbury by 14 goals.
The Hawks started the game quickly, scoring the first two goals including a solid snap from Beau Morgan.
Leigh Kohlmann opened the Tigers account at the other end before Chris White scored his first while Jake Rodgers banged home two majors to give AMR a 5.0.30 to 2.2.14 lead at the first break.
Jackson Ellis kicked the first goal of the second term while Mitchell Payne added the second.
South Bunbury found some rhythm and hit back with two majors to Guy Piggott.
Cameron Melvin had to be helped off the ground with a suspected left ankle injury but it didn’t slow his side down much.
Lincoln Adams kicked truly while Beau Morgan added another major after the half time siren to stretch the margin out to 9.3.57 to 4.5.29.
The third term saw the Hawks run riot. Morgan soccered through a shot on goal by Mitch Lynn and added another of his own moments later.
Payne also kicked two in the term with Hayden Krikke kicking his sides only goal of the quarter.
The Tigers looked a broken side in the last and the Hawks were ready to cash in on a decent percentage boost.
Seve Grantis kicked the first goal of the fourth quarter before Lynn added back-to-back majors.
Goals to Payne, Mitch Gerrans and White heaped more pain on and the last goal of the match from South Bunbury’s Craig Mezger was not going to make a lot of difference in the 20.7.127 to 6.7.43 defeat.
At the halfway point of the regular season, the Hawks sit seventh on the ladder with a 4-5 record while South Bunbury have tumbled down to fifth with a 5-4 record.
Next weekend the South West Football League side will take on the Peel Football League in Mandurah in round one of the 2017 Landmark Country Football Championships.
