Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School hosted the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) last Friday as part of the orchestra’s regional tour.
Students had the opportunity to learn from members of WAYJO in an afternoon workshop before putting on a combined performance for the public in the school’s auditorium that evening.
Acting Head of Learning Arts Shaun Molewyk said it was an incredible opportunity for students who were inspired by the jazz genre to learn about jazz techniques.
“The students learnt a great deal from their workshop where they were able to play with professional and semiprofessional musicians,” Mr Molewyk said.
“The workshop and subsequent concert was quite simply amazing.
“We look forward to working with an array of similar performance groups in the future.”
WAYJO’s purpose is to engage and challenge emerging jazz musicians, to inspire them to reach their greatest potential, and to captivate audiences with exceptional performance experiences.
It provides a unique experience for jazz musicians aged 14 to 25 who are rewarded with career-defining experiences including touring, training, recording and performing with world-class guest artists such as James Morrison.
The regional tour also saw WAYJO perform at schools in Albany, Denmark and Margaret River and at the Jazz by the Bay festival in Busselton.
Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School provide an array of music and performing arts opportunities for students both within the school curriculum and as co-curricular options.
