A number of South Regional TAFE’s VET in schools cooking and hospitality students were put through their paces on Friday as part of the bi-annual regional World Skills competition.
Under the watchful eye of professional judges, students from four different high schools studying a certificate II in kitchen operations prepared a three-course menu that included a bruschetta entree, a main of chicken breast and duchess potatoes with a cream mustard sauce and a lemon polenta cake dessert.
Hospitality students then prepared complex mocktails to accompany the food, serving the lot to the judges and assorted guests in the Epicure Training Restaurant.
The kitchen operations students were judged in the kitchen on correct methods of cooking, safety, hygiene, timing and creativity while their dishes were judged for taste and presentation.
Later this year South Regional TAFE’s tertiary students will complete similar challenges in the competition’s open category in a bid to qualify for the state and national finals.
