Birds housed in the Anzac Park aviary located outside the Bunbury Library have been rehomed after the South West Avicultural Society informed the City of Bunbury they were no longer in a position to care for them.
The Society has cared for Anzac Park birds for 40 years with the City, which does not own the birds, contributing for food.
An aviary has been on site since 1977 but with the number of Society members declining, in the best interests of the birds’ welfare, it was decided they would be relocated to private homes.
Acting manager tourism, events and Wildlife Park Isabell Evans said the City considered other options for the birds, however they could not be achieved without the City incurring a significant cost.
“It is unfortunate the birds cannot remain on public display, but the community can be confident they are being cared for in an appropriate environment,” Ms Evans said.
Discussions are currently taking place regarding the use of the aviary into the future, however it is likely that it will be removed from Anzac Park.
