Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School’s year six students excelled themselves at the recent Independent Primary Schools Heads of Australia Speakers’ Challenge at Scotch College.
Coming home from the June 28 competition with two gold medals, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School was the only regional school to enter the competition.
There were six preliminary finals with 54 contestants battling to come out on top.
Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School students Jake Townsend-Hyde and William Darlow each won a gold medal while Ella McCarthy was awarded a bronze medal.
Year six teacher Kate Holdman said they were the best results the school has ever had at the competition.
“Having two out of six places in the grand final was an awesome achievement,” Mrs Holdman said.
“Will came fourth and Jake come fifth [in the grand final] which was a fantastic effort.”
Students from 21 schools wrote and delivered speeches based on a topic of their choice.
Twelve adjudicators judged the speeches based on how clearly students informed, persuaded or entertained the audience.
Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School hosted an internal speakers’ challenge to determine which students would represent the school at the competition in Perth.
