Award-winning musician Dan Howls is gearing up for his first Good Nights show at the Red Mill Studio in Bunbury later this month, followed by a house concert in Gelorup at a secret, yet-to-be-revealed location.
The blues rock guitarist exploded onto the music scene at last years' Nannup Music Festival, taking out the Emerging Artist award.
The man behind the music, Daniel Hoy, said he’s used to the personal concert environment he’s expecting for his first Good Nights show, having recently toured throughout small venues in Europe.
“I haven’t played a Good Nights show before but we have played similar kinds of shows in Europe, very small and intimate shows which are lovely,” he said.
“It’s really nice having a smaller crowd and being really stripped back.”
His dark, rough and sultry voice has been described as a mix between Tom Waits and Jeff Buckley, but Hoy said fans can expect something a little different and raw from his upcoming shows in Bunbury.
“People say that my performances are quite passionate and a bit sweaty,” he laughed.
“It’s something quite different, it has a growly electric guitar but people come and listen probably mostly for the vocals.”
Born in, and based out of Perth, Hoy has recently been nominated for WAM’s song of the year and continues to pack out shows around Fremantle with his impressive band featuring Josh Cutler, Callum Sealamb and Julia Weller.
But Bunbury fans will be treated to a special solo show from Dan Howls that boasts the best of The Black Keys and Gary Clarke jr and makes for an ecstatic lively and original experience for a mesmerised audience.
Hoy is also currently getting ready for the drop of he and the band’s full vinyl album in October, and said he was very particular about releasing the record in vinyl.
“CD’s are kind of arbitrary, no one really uses them much anymore. And as for the digital platform, I think it’s just nicer for someone to have something physical,” he said.
“(The album) is coming along very well. All the recordings are done and we’ve just released digitally released one of the singles.”
Dan Howls will perform at The Red Mill Studio on Saturday, July 22 at 7pm, backed up by a second show at a secret house concert location in Gelorup on July 23. Bring your own drinks, snacks and comfy seats. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit alwaysgoodnights.com/shows.
