A poignant exhibition of original illustrations from Small Things – a graphic novel by Mel Tregonning and Shaun Tan is now on display at Bunbury Regional Art Galleries.
Small Things is a beautifully illustrated children’s book which debuted in September 2016. Through pictures it tells the story of a boy who feels alone with his worries, but who learns help is always close by.
It is a universal story, told simply and with breathtaking beauty, about dealing with sadness, anxiety, depression, heartache or loss and finding your way in the world.
Creator Mel Tregonning passed away in 2014 aged 31 after battling depression and anxiety.
Her family insisted upon completing the work, with creative direction from artist Shaun Tan, who completed the essential final illustrations.
A reprint was required shortly after the release and publishing rights are currently being sold across the world.
Small Things has made a great and lasting impression with educators and mental health professionals due to the teaching potential for raising awareness and promoting mental health conversations among youth and families.
There are high hopes for Small Things to place in the children's picture book awards for the year.
The exhibition is open until August 27. BRAG is open 10am to 4pm daily and entry is free.
