Bunbury to hold a Rally For Love in support of marriage equality

Event organiser and City of Bunbury councillor Joel McGuinness said the event aims to promote the message that love is important to everyone in the community. 

“I think Australia is ready to get behind marriage equality and it has been dragged out for long enough now,” he told the Mail on Tuesday. 

“People are disillusioned with the process and angry at the amount of money the plebiscite will cost but now we just have to make the best of it and show that there is a strong wave of support for marriage equality.”

Saturday’s event will see supporters of marriage equality gather at Anzac Park from 2pm for a march down Victoria Street to Maker + Co at 3pm. 

From 4pm, Maker + Co will host a free love concert for marriage equality with performers Latehorse, Zoe Dellaca, Anam Cara, Leni and Gordon Tayler all set to perform. 

Mr McGuinness said it is very important that everyone is enrolled to vote before next week’s cut-off. 

“Those who join us at Anzac Park will have the chance to check their voting enrolments on iPads and we will have a number of volunteers including Bunbury MLA Don Punch helping people to complete enrolment forms manually too,” he said. 

The Mail understands a number of other dignitaries including Federal Member for Forrest Nola Marino and WA Premier Mark McGowan have also been invited to the event. 

The concert at Maker + Co can cater for 100 guests with tickets currently available online in return for a donation here. 

Mr McGuinness said the overwhelming support for the event may result in a change to a bigger venue between now and Saturday. 

“We are exploring our options quickly as so many people want to be involved,” he said.
