Has your school got what it takes to grow the biggest pumpkin in the South West?
Harcourts APG in Bunbury have again teamed up with Mumballup Organics and the Diggers Club for the annual South West primary school and South West high school giant pumpkin growing competition.
Each school that enters will be supplied with four Atlantic giant pumpkin seeds and with the help of a bag of growing medium ‘Mumby Magic’ soil improver, the pumpkins will have every chance to flourish.
Competition organiser Den Baldwin said some healthy competition in the classroom and between neighbouring schools is encouraged.
“The main objective of this exercise is for the school children to see how easily a seed can be transformed and grown for food,” he said.
“It helps students learn about soil preparation, the sowing of seeds, the ongoing feeding and watering requirements and at the end, they learn to harvest their produce.”
The primary school and the high school that has the biggest pumpkin at next April’s weigh in will receive a trophy, an annual subscription to the Diggers Club magazine and school garden supplies including vegetable seeds and another bag of ‘Mumby Magic’.
Schools from Harvey to Donnybrook and every town in between have expressed interest in entering the competition.
