Bunbury MLA Don Punch has delivered more community grants to South West organisations as part of the state government’s Local Projects, Local Jobs program.
The Milligan Community Learning and Resources Centre received $50,000 to reinvigorate the Nixi program for teen and young mothers.
Funding will be put towards community consultation, data collection and staff training to better develop the program, ready for implementation in February 2018.
The centre will also receive $10,000 for equipment and installation at its new outdoor play area, aimed at improving the mental and physical health of the children attending the Milligan for Kids program.
Mr Punch said these grants will help to ensure young families in Bunbury are supported and have the opportunity to thrive.
“The support offered by the Milligan CLRC is so important for young mums, especially those living in regional areas,” he said.
“I am very proud to have played a part in delivering this funding.”
The South West Women’s Refuge also received a grant of $10,000 from the state government for new beds, mattresses and bedding to support women and children escaping family violence.
in 2016/17 South West Refuge accommodated 109 women and 121 children in their refuge and transitional units, and supported a further 98 women and the children living with them in their own homes through the Safe at Home service.
“South West Women’s Refuge provides a vitally important service to women and children in the region through crisis accommodation and outreach,” he said.
“This grant will support the refuge in replacing beds and bedding to help create an even more welcoming environment for women and children.”
