A Perth BMX club who was criticised for its use of the controversial Confederate flag has announced it will review the use of the symbol on its apparel.
Southside BMX Club came under fire on Wednesday after a local resident raised concerns about the use of the Confederate glad on its merchandise and signage - a banner of the slave-holding Confederate states during the American Civil War.
Local resident Joseph told 6PR's Morning Show with Gareth Parker he found the use of the symbol "highly inappropriate".
"I just think it's a little bit out of order and for it to be publicly visible and representing a suburb in Perth," he said.
"[The fact] the state WA championships will be held at this venue with the Confederate flag for all to see... I just think it's highly inappropriate. I think that if you knew the facts behind it you just wouldn't choose to have it representing you as a club."
It is understood the club entered into talks with the Department of Sport and Recreation and the sport's governing body BMX Sports WA to resolve the issue on Wednesday afternoon.
A BMX Sports WA spokesperson said the relevant authorities would now consider the sensitivities regarding the resemblance to the Confederate flag.
"The club flag has been the logo of the Southside BMX Club for more than 35 years," they said.
"However as a result of recent events in the United States, the club and BMX Sports Western Australia acknowledge that now is an appropriate time to review its positioning to ensure it is representative of the values of the sport."
BMX Sports WA president Warren Edwardes said action would be taken, and he applauded the club's quick response to the community complaint.
"The Southside BMX Club Committee will be meeting later this week to discuss the matter further, and as appropriate update its club flag to reflect the values-based, community spirit of BMX in Western Australia," he said.
"We applaud Southside BMX Clubs swift action on this important matter and are absolutely committed to ensuring that no one feels excluded from participating in this great, family-oriented sport.
"Importantly there are children as young as two in BMX Clubs, so any public opinion on this matter should be handled delicately whilst we work through the matter with those involved."
On Wednesday Southside BMX xlub president Sandra Winfield told 6PR the club would consider changing its logo, but there was no intention to be racist.
Since the end of the American Civil War, private and official use of the Confederate flag has continued under philosophical, political, cultural, and racial controversy in the United States.
