The last year the black-footed tree-rat was spotted in WA's Kimberley the West Coast Eagles were in their debut AFL season, the America's Cup defence came to Fremantle and Kylie Minogue was dominating the music charts.
The large native mammal was caught on camera at Bachsten Creek by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, confirming its existence to researchers who have been searching for the elusive critter since 1987.
DBCA Parks and Wildlife Service ecologist Ben Corey said remote field cameras were set up over the wet season, and after eight months in field their footage was reviewed, revealing the large tree dwelling rodent with its distinctive black feet and long black and white tail.
"Many species, such as the endangered northern quoll and golden-backed tree-rat, as well as sugar gliders and scaly-tailed possums were recorded," Mr Corey said.
"However, the biggest surprise was photographic evidence of the black-footed tree-rat - the first in 30 years.
"It has not been seen in the Kimberley since 1987, despite considerable survey efforts during this period."
Double confirmation was provided by analysis of a hair found in python scat, found in a nest box close to one of the camera sites.
"This suggests black-footed tree-rats are still present in the Kimberley, although very elusive," Mr Corey said.
