A new photography exhibition is set to launch at Bunbury Regional Art Galleries on Friday as part of an ongoing series of major retrospective exhibitions by some of the most respected senior artists of the South West.
John Austin: Survey II 1994-2017 focuses on Austin’s 45-year career in photography, during which time he has held over 11 solo exhibitions.
He is known for working exclusively with fine silver-gelatin black and white prints, normally from large format cameras. All of his images are shot on film, and processed in his Quinninup darkroom.
The timeframe for this retrospective begins with the photographer’s move to Quinninup when he also began his involvement with anti-logging protests in the area. Documentation of these protests and the destruction of the South West forests, are an integral part of the photographer’s work.
BRAG director Julian Bowron said Austin has been working steadily over his career to refine his practice and his creative voice is uniquely important to the culture of our region.
”This retrospective is a chance for us to showcase this contribution to a wide audience and to support it by producing a comprehensive catalogue which will accompany the exhibition.
Austin will host an artist talk at his exhibition on Saturday from 2pm with free entry to the collection every day between 10am and 4pm until November 26, 2017. For more information, visit brag.org.au.
