A glass of milk almost cost a World War II digger $1500.
Ernie Allan had his wallet stolen after a young man asked to come into his Pinjarra home for a glass of milk.
The 94-year-old was about to sit down for a bite to eat around midday on Tuesday when he heard a knock at the door.
He told Radio 6PR a young man was carrying a cup and asked if he could come in for some milk.
"He was a real gentleman," he said on Friday morning.
"He came in, he was clean, spoke alright and he even shared the bottle of milk.
"He shook hands and he went out."
Mr Allan, who was stationed in New Guinea for almost three years during World War II, said it was only when his neighbour came over the next day he realised his wallet was gone.
"Oh how can you feel mate? You feel bloody terrible don't you," he said.
Mr Allan was absolutely devastated he was swindled out of $1500... until Radio 6PR listeners heeded a call to help him out.
Breakfast Program host Bazil Zempilas played the show's regular $1000 Minute segment, donating the winnings to Mr Allan, before station listeners rang in to donate another $500 in under an hour.
The nonagenarian said he was overwhelmed that 6PR callers had helped him out.
"That's wonderful for sure, $1500 would be nice," he said.
Neighbour Wayne Cowcher said the theft had knocked Mr Allan around.
"We have been neighbours for 20 years and he is normally full of spirit but the last couple for days have knocked him around a bit," he told Radio 6PR.
"I came over the next morning and Ernie said a nice young fellow came in yesterday, come and got a glass of milk off me and shook my hand when he left.
"That's when alarm bells rang for me ... I noticed his wallet wasn't on the counter.
"Ernie being Ernie, he would let anybody in.
"While Ernie was getting the milk out the fridge, obviously his wallet has gone missing."
Mr Cowcher is hoping a person captured on a neighbour's CCTV riding a bicycle could lead to the man's arrest.
"We got him on camera but it's not a really good shot of him, but it's not too bad either," he said.
